Dr. Gertrude N. Kiwanuka is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Mbarara University of Science and Technology. She joined Mbarara University of Science and Technology in 1992 as a Master of Science postgraduate student. She holds a BSc. degree
(Makerere University), a MSc. Biochemistry degree (MUST), a PhD in Biochemistry degree (MUST), and postdoctoral training in immunology of malaria infection at the Division of Parasitology, MRC National Institute for Medical Research, London, UK.
Dr. Kiwanuka has held various leadership offices at MUST including Head of Biochemistry Department (2013-2017), Dean-Faculty of Medicine (20172021), and Member of MUST University Council. As the Vice Chairperson of MUST Research Ethics Committee since 2013, and the Program Director of the Fogarty International Center (FIC)-funded “Mbarara University Research Ethics Education Programme”, she has contributed to building research and multi-level research ethics capacity at MUST.
Her areas of interest are in molecular studies and mechanisms of pathogenesis of infectious diseases, particularly malaria and HIV, non-communicable diseases – diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and research ethics.
