Our History

Makerere University Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) emerged from the Mulago-Mbarara Teaching Hospitals Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) which was established in November 2004 under the then Makerere University Faculty of Medicine. 

With funding from the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and technical assistance from the United States of America Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), MJAP established a strong trail in the provision of quality comprehensive HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) services.

Overtime, MJAP has broadened its work beyond the support of provision of comprehensive HIV and TB services to include capacity strengthening for health care workers across Uganda and conduct of research to inform policies for HIV/TB and other HIV comorbidities in the country.
 
Currently, the flourishing institution plays a pivotal role in the Uganda health care system having developed strong links with the Ministry of Health through its contribution to various technical working groups and long term support of HIV/TB services in districts, regional referral hospitals and public health facilities across the various regions in the country.

Key Achievements

  • Scaled up ART to 28 facilities including Health Centre IIs
  • Established two one-stop center HIV clinics for the provision of comprehensive HIV/AIDS services to key populations
  • Refurbished and equipped 21 laboratories
  • Supported accreditation of three labs in Strengthening Laboratories Management Towards Accreditation (SLMTA)
  • Established Technical Advisory Committees at the districts and referral hospitals to provide oversight for HIV services
  • Trained more than 13,996 workers; supported facilities to recruit health workers
  • Logistics and supply chain management: Trained logistics personnel in LSCM; implemented Supervision, Performance Assessment and Recognition Strategy
  • M&E: Supported all partner institutions to report through the Ministry of Health District Health Information Software II
  • Health Financing: Provided and monitored sub-grants to Mbarara District, Makerere University-John’s Hopkins University collaboration, Makerere University and Butabika Hospitals.
