The Makerere Run 2025 (#MakRun2025), organized by the Makerere University Endowment Fund (MAKEF) on 17th August 2025, returned for its fifth edition as Kampala’s premier charity marathon — uniting over 8,000 participants, including students, alumni, corporate teams, and elite athletes.
This landmark event combined competitive racing with transformative social impact, channeling proceeds toward strengthening Makerere University’s community programs, supporting the Disability Support Centre, and building a sustainable fund to assist economically disadvantaged students in the long term.
The marathon featured both competitive and fun run categories, ensuring participation across all age groups and fitness levels. Alumni returned to reconnect with their alma mater, while students, staff, and the wider community came together in solidarity for a cause that extends well beyond athletics.
The event also served as a powerful platform for disability advocacy, health promotion, and wellness awareness. Sponsors played a crucial role in ensuring the event’s success through financial and logistical support. Speaking at the event, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe emphasized that initiatives like the Makerere Run embody the university’s commitment to education, inclusion, and social responsibility — both on campus and beyond.
As part of its ongoing commitment to public health, MJAP (Makerere University Joint AIDS Program) extended essential HIV and TB services during the marathon. The team provided on-site HIV counseling, distributed over 200 HIV self-testing kits, and offered targeted health education to students and participants. These efforts aimed to raise awareness, promote early diagnosis, and connect individuals to care — reinforcing MJAP’s mission to improve health outcomes among young people and the broader community.
