MJAP pioneered and scaled up the integrated TB/HIV services model at the Mulago National Referral Hospital and in all the 7 regional referral hospitals in Uganda. This model has since been adopted by the MoH for national scale-up of TB/HIV co-management. Currently, MJAP supports integrated TB/HIV service provision at all supported facilities. Through its support to the Uganda National TB Reference Laboratory (NTRL), MJAP has facilitated the scale-up of the use of GeneXpert for TB diagnosis and EQA for TB diagnostics.
We prioritize TB treatment and prevention in our supported sites with a focus on improved case detection, linkage, and initiation of anti TB treatment, TB infection prevention, and streamlining reporting for TB.
Also, we support the Mulago Hospital TB unit to strengthen the MDR-TB/HIV one-stop-shop by integrating all the patient records for MDR-TB and HIV, synchronizing appointments for both conditions, training and mentoring clinicians to offer both services in one clinical visit. Additionally, we have continued to support the susceptible TB/ HIV integrated clinic in the same TB unit. This integration has improved viral load coverage and viral suppression among TB/HIV co-infected clients to 90% and 88% respectively.
We also facilitate regular site-specific quality improvement mentorship sessions with support from the Ministry of Health department of Quality assurance.
