EIPHIV-U Mentorship Engagement Strengthens HIV/TB Service Delivery and CQI Implementation Across 16 Facilities in East Central Uganda

Between 18th August and 18th September 2025, the Education for Inter-Professional HIV Service Delivery in Uganda (EIPHIV-U) project, implemented by Makerere University Joint AIDS Programme (MJAP), successfully conducted physical mentorship engagements across 16 high-volume facilities in East Central Uganda, mentoring over 100 health workers and strengthening HIV/TB service delivery through Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI).

Led by a dedicated team of mentors Kasakaire Joel Laban Sabiti, Shadrack Wanyina, Walusaga Happy, Tereka Susan, Mwende Peace, Ndegemu Eseza, and Kakuule Salmah the visits reviewed ongoing CQI projects, addressed challenges, and introduced new integration focused initiatives in viral load coverage, appointment keeping, Non Communicable Disease screening, Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission EID, and TB case identification.

Facilities such as Iganga Hospital, Walukuba HC IV, Kidera HC IV, Bugono HC IV, and Busia HC IV demonstrated strong interprofessional teamwork, functional WITs, and innovative practices, while others like Kamuli Hospital, and Masafu Hospital require targeted support to strengthen integration and documentation. With facility leadership actively engaged and CQI now fully embraced at facility level, EIPHIV-U has significantly improved service delivery outcomes and created a culture of data-driven decision making.

The mentorship underscored the importance of leadership, lab integration, and structured QI systems, with recommendations focusing on scaling successful interventions, strengthening QI committees, and sustaining integration efforts. These promising results highlight that EIPHIV-U is a proven model that should be scaled up to further strengthen Uganda’s health system and accelerate progress toward improved HIV/TB and NCD care.
